Microelectronics Technicians Job Overview

Microelectronic engineers generally support the development of prototypes or new types of electronic components and products. They work closely with electronic engineers who design, build, and test components and prepare the component or product for large-scale manufacturing. Such components typically require the integrated operation of several or many different types of chips.

Microelectronics engineers generally work according to a circuit diagram that the designer has received. The schematic contains a list of the parts necessary to create the component and the design that the technician will follow. The technician collects the pieces and prepares the materials to use. Following the schematic, the technician designs the component and then uses a variety of sophisticated and highly sensitive devices to test the performance of the component. Such a test measures the burning time of the component. During this test, the component is kept in continuous operation for a long period of time and the component and its various features undergo a variety of tests to ensure that the component can withstand long-term use.

If the component does not meet the required specifications, the microelectronics technician should be able to fix the design, determine where the component has failed, and replace a part with a new or different one. Test results are reported to technical personnel and the technician may need to help evaluate the results and generate reports based on these evaluations. In many situations, the microelectronics technician works closely with the engineer to resolve any problems that arise with the operation and design of the component.

After the testing phase, the microelectronic engineer is often responsible for supporting the technical writing of the component specifications. These specifications are used to integrate the component into new or redesigned products or to develop the process to manufacture the component on a large scale. The microelectronic engineer helps develop the component's production system and writes reports on the component's functions, uses, and performance.
