Responsibility of the System Administrator


Short for "system administrator," system administrators are responsible for the administration, administration, and support activities associated with the IT infrastructure of a multi-user organization. Responsibilities within the domain of IT systems administration can be spread across different job titles depending on the size of the organization or the scope of work required. For example, Database Administrator (DBA), Security Administrator, and Network Administrator may be separate job roles in a large company, but may be performed by a single system administrator in an SMB organization.

Role and responsibility of the system administrator
The responsibilities/ system admin tasks include the following:

User Administration. The primary responsibility of a systems administrator is to support the reliable and effective use of complex IT systems by end users, be they internal employees or external customers. Activities range from identity and access management to the provision of dedicated technical support to individual users. System administrators can be the focal point of contact within IT departments to help users resolve any technology related issues.
System in maintenance. System administrators are responsible for the reliable access and availability to IT systems. Therefore, system administrators must resolve and resolve issues that compromise system performance or access to an IT service. This responsibility also involves regular system improvements, such as updates based on changes to end users and business requirements.

Documentation. System administrators must keep records of IT resource usage. End user requests, business requirements and IT issues are documented to plan future IT investments and updates. The documentation also acts as a fundamental requirement for regulatory compliance.
Health monitoring system. Most IT problems go unnoticed until the impact hits end users. Therefore, system administrators monitor the status of the system and identify abnormal network behavior, which may include security sensitive activities, such as unauthorized network access and data transfer. Advanced technological solutions can be used to perform these activities, supporting the wider IT Security and Operations departments.
Backup and disaster recovery. System administrators implement data backup and disaster recovery strategies for various IT systems and SDLC environments. They also provide end users with access to data that may have been deleted or unavailable. Activities may include implementing automated software solutions or replacing hardware and software components.
Application Compatibility System administrators support IT teams to ensure that software systems and feature versions are compatible with the IT infrastructure. A system administrator can perform tasks such as testing server load performance and installing or upgrading hardware.
Management of configuration and web services. System administrators regularly perform administration and configuration management of Web services, also ensuring that configuration changes are documented and follow the organization's policies associated with access and cyber security. Configuration changes can be applied using the automation and configuration management tools.
Network administration. System administrators ensure that network interactions follow the organization's policies and protocols to maintain the integrity of the network. Network engineering experience may be required to perform mission-critical network management tasks.
