Computer Operator Job Description, Skills & Requirements


Computer operators are responsible for observing and managing the operation of computers and related equipment within an organization. They ensure that computer systems and networks function effectively and efficiently by entering the correct commands and planning the use of computer terminals. Operators are also assigned the task of tracking, recording, and solving system or program problems or reporting equipment problems to the appropriate authorities within the organization.

Other activities could include responding to computer users' problems over the phone, collaborating with other employees to evaluate the performance of the new program, and training colleagues in similar or useful roles. Operators also determine what information technology and other materials to use and how they should be used, based on pre-existing organizational rules, procedures, or policies.

Required education
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employers generally require entry-level computer operators to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. However, the BLS states that most employed computer operators can have a diploma or associate diploma.

Employers generally require operators to receive training on the job, at a vocational school, or through a college program. Training requirements may include 1-2 years of work experience or time spent in an apprenticeship program.

Required skills
Computer operators must have a general technical knowledge of computer systems and networks and how they work. They must be experts in program monitoring, troubleshooting, and troubleshooting, and must be prepared to work with application software, LAN, database and file management, and reporting, among many other types.

Critical thinking and decision-making skills are important in this position, as problems that are difficult to detect and difficult to solve can easily arise. The need to report problems to supervisors, train employees, and provide assistance to computer users within the organization requires strong communication skills.
