Duties and responsibilities of the civil foreman

Would you like to lead a team that deals with construction projects that are important to the public? If so, being a civil foreman might be a good fit for your career. Civil foremen supervise workers doing things like building bridges, repairing roads, improving airports, and building communication towers. Foremen spend most of their time on construction sites, but may have an office for tasks such as filing documents or holding meetings. Working full-time is the norm and overtime is the order of the day when deadlines approach or emergency situations arise. Most of the civil foremen are men.

Duties and responsibilities of the civil foreman

The project itself will determine many of the specific roles of a civil foreman, but many basic responsibilities are common to most positions. Based on our analysis of job postings, prospective civilian foremen should be prepared to do the following:

Monitor a team

Construction projects are group efforts and foremen supervise team members to ensure the flow of operations. They can hire people and schedule their working hours. On site, they communicate instructions, inspect work, and sometimes work side by side with their representatives to demonstrate techniques or assist.

Manage workers

Good morale increases productivity, so civilian foremen try to keep team morale and energy high. They can step in to solve problems between workers or fire employees who don't leave a mark. Civil foremen also handle employee-related matters, such as payroll.

Meet the supervisors

Several people are interested in how a project is going. With their first-hand knowledge of what is happening on site, civil foremen must provide updates and answer questions to project engineers, leaders, and clients. If management decides to make changes to the original plans, they discuss them with the foremen so they can pass on new information to their team.

Follow the procedures

Safety is a priority at all construction sites. Foremen make sure workers know and follow safety rules, such as wearing helmets and other protective clothing. These leaders are also experts in local government and politics and see that their team's actions conform to these rules.
