Accounts Assistant Job Description

Providing general financial and accounting assistance to an organization's finance department is the primary role of the Accounting Assistant. Their role is a combination of administrative assistance and accounting support. They need to be able to run an office and perform higher-level functions such as invoice processing and handling of accounts receivable requests.

Accountants work under the supervision of an accountant or department supervisor, but many of their duties are performed with little or no supervision. Accountants must be motivated and work comfortably under minimal supervision. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an 8% drop in demand for accounting, bookkeeping and auditing employees. Due to the popularity of online financial and accounting services, accounting assistants can expect to see a similar decline in their field.

Duties and responsibilities of the account assistant

The type of organization an accounting assistant works for will determine their particular responsibilities, however there are several main tasks that all accounting assistants perform. A review of current job listings identified the following key tasks and responsibilities.

Carry out financial and accounting activities.

Accounting assistants will perform various financial and accounting functions. They can help file quarterly or annual tax returns, process credit transactions, make and record deposits, perform bank reconciliations, prepare financial reports and forecasts, assist with budget planning, and maintain ledgers and software. The scope and nature of these functions vary widely depending on the type and size of the organization you work for, but accounting assistants must have experience in accounting and financial practices to perform their functions.

Provide administrative assistance

Many accountants will also help with clerical or administrative tasks. They can answer the phone, greet customers, make appointments, file documents, perform data entry, scan documents, receive and sort mail, and any other activity that helps run the office. Depending on the type of organization you work for, this can be a major part of the job or a minor part of the job, but most accounting assistants will find themselves performing some of these functions sooner or later. In larger organizations, these functions may be limited to the accounting department, while in smaller companies, the accounting assistant can assist several or all departments as needed.
