Duties and Responsibilities of the Maintenance Manager



Maintenance managers are responsible for the general maintenance of their employer's business or activities. They oversee all aspects of the maintenance process, from installation and maintenance to inspection and repair, and often play a practical role in one or more stages of the process. The regulatory requirements of this position require strong leadership skills, including the ability to effectively delegate duties and responsibilities. Due to the nature of the position, maintenance managers have traditionally had to work on site, and working hours can vary depending on the employment relationship. As a supervisor, maintenance managers often supervise a group of subordinates and respond directly to their employer or other senior members of the organization.

Develop and follow a service plan

Most importantly, maintenance managers must ensure that their employer's business is properly maintained. To do this, a successful maintenance manager must develop and maintain a plan that will ensure optimal operational efficiency. In other words, make sure everything runs smoothly and without errors. Such a plan requires analytical thinking, the ability to predict problems, effective planning, and a talent for budgeting time and work.

Assign tasks and work orders

As a supervisor, maintenance managers are responsible for assigning tasks and delegating responsibility. The nature of these tasks depends on the specific job specifications, but each task serves a specific aspect of the overall system maintenance, from simpler tasks such as general administrative tasks to more complex tasks involving advanced mechanical operations.

Train and evaluate employees

To ensure operational efficiency and adherence to company standards, the maintenance manager educates his team on best practices and reviews and evaluates the performance of his employees for continued success.

Perform maintenance

Depending on the size and purpose of their team, maintenance managers often support one or more maintenance tasks. Completing these assignments can be for educational purposes, as a demonstration, or simply as one of the tasks of the position.

Coordinate with others

Communication is an important part of the maintenance manager's day-to-day workflow. Whether reporting to supervisors, coordinating with suppliers and contractors, or meeting with peers and other supervisors, the maintenance manager is responsible for communicating effectively with all parties in a way that resolves all problems and requests.
