Duties and responsibilities of the validation engineer

Validation engineers plan, create, and conduct tests to verify that a company's manufacturing facilities produce products that meet performance, quality, and industrial safety standards. Their understanding of manufacturing processes and data analysis will help them avoid and fix problems while working with management to improve the company's manufacturing processes. This role is suitable for undergraduate graduates with very strong communication and problem-solving skills. Most validation engineers work full-time in companies that often manufacture medical or technological products.

Duties and responsibilities of the validation engineer

While the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of a validation engineer depend on their job, there are many core tasks associated with this role. Based on our analysis of job vacancies, these include:

Calibration of production systems

To avoid quality and performance issues during production, validation engineers review parameters such as accuracy and tolerances and compare the company's products to these measurements and industry standards. They then calibrate production systems that do not reach or exceed the accepted values.

Design and implementation of verification tests

Validation engineers work with management and others on manufacturing to create tests that measure the performance and quality of the products that the company's equipment produces. This includes developing a list of standards and indicators and selecting software, tools and formats for such tests. They then run these tests to obtain data for analysis.

Analyze the test results of the devices

Using data analysis techniques and software, validation engineers review the results of validation tests to determine the root cause of errors, security risks, and performance issues. They also use the data to assess risks and verify compliance with government standards such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical device manufacturing.

Solve quality problems

Troubleshooting testing can include recalibrating devices, repairing devices, or changing business processes or products to meet standards and minimize risk. Validation engineers can also meet with management to develop plans for quality improvement or long-term process improvement.

Create reports and documentation

When developing, running, and reviewing tests or making changes, validation engineers create documentation that records all of the steps taken and all measurements that are considered for future use. This documentation helps you conduct further audits, fix problems and make these materials available for validation when necessary.
