Industrial Electrician Duties and Responsibilities

Industrial electricians oversee the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems in factories, warehouses, production areas, and other businesses. They test existing hardware and determine if system components need to be updated or replaced. They test switches, motors, regulators, and other parts of an industrial electrical system. Industrial electricians typically work with hydraulic, pneumatic, and other systems. Work on robotic devices is becoming more common, and industrial electricians are also responsible for maintaining and repairing these devices.

Industrial electricians work for employers such as utilities, steelmakers, automotive and mining companies, and usually report to plant managers or maintenance managers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that overall employment growth for electricians is projected at 14 percent by 2024.

Responsibilities of the Industrial Electrician

To keep production and manufacturing systems running smoothly, industrial electricians must perform several daily tasks. We analyzed several vacancies for industrial electricians and found that the following roles and responsibilities are often specified for this profession.

Install new electrical systems

Industrial electricians are responsible for installing new or refurbished equipment in manufacturing facilities. You will run tests to make sure the new machines are ready for deployment and resolve any issues before the machines are used on a daily basis.

Troubleshooting electrical problems

When equipment in a plant encounters problems, the industrial electrician must determine the source of the problem. You need to know how to troubleshoot different types of equipment, such as hydraulic or robotic systems, and understand why the equipment is not working as expected.

Repair and maintenance of existing equipment

After identifying the problem, industrial electricians must use tools and spare parts to repair production and production machines. Industrial electricians also perform regular weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly maintenance to keep machines running and avoid downtime due to breakdowns or improper operations.

Maintain logs and records of repair and maintenance

It is important for industrial electricians to create and manage repair and maintenance reports for industrial equipment. This is important information that managers need to know if they need to upgrade or replace machines. There are records of current problems or evidence that the machines have been properly maintained.
